As in a photographer’s darkroom, the processing of this picture slowly reveals a frozen moment. Serendipity 51 is one of many charcoal studies drawn methodically from memory. Franko's ability to dissect gesture and convey impulse comes from recollections accrued by what he calls "vaporizing" the past. Choosing to work in black and white the artist removes himself from color’s dictatorship, attempting to create a purified glimpse of a moment.
