The influential poet and performer Max Blagg transforms powerful excerpts of his writing into wall sculptures by inscribing vintage typewriter cases hand-picked from his personal collection. Blagg's typewriter series is well-respected and collected by Nate Lowman, James Nares, Larry Clark, and more. His work repurposes the writing machine, translating the simultaneous act of typing and thinking into three dimensions such that text fragments become sound bites. Using language as his medium, the "boho raconteur" builds imagery that floats off the wall and into our consciousness: for instance, "Venus at the one stop/pounding memory into fragrance" and "my daughter's eyes/green diamonds catching fire". Hermes 3000, the Swiss-made typewriter introduced in 1958, is regarded as one of the most deluxe machines ever created, and was offered in slick colors like mint green. If you're a poetry neophyte, we think "Detonate/Bliss/Lock" is a good place to start.
