The Master of Paddington
On Christmas Eve 1974 two young men painted the words FAR AWAY IS CLOSE AT HAND IN IMAGES OF ELSEWHERE on a wall outside Paddington railway station in London. The graffiti remained in one form or another until the end of the 20th century, and lingered in the minds of many of the millions of travellers who had glimpsed it. I named my 2013 exhibition in Soho after it, and was lucky enough to meet the two (no longer so young) men on the opening night. The graffiti was ascribed to 'The Master of Paddington' by Michael Wharton, writing as 'Peter Simple', in the Daily Telegraph.
