Michael Bevilacqua's solo show "ExSanquiNatio_N," opens tomorrow in Montauk. He is also in a concurrent group exhibition at The Fireplace Project in East Hampton, NY, opening June 27th. Drawing influences from a myriad of sources, ranging from cartoon characters and song lyrics to graffiti and art historical imagery, Bevilacqua incorporates everyday iconography he encounters into his mixed-media works, revealing his own cultural proclivities. Known for working in all manner of materials, Bevilacqua creates paintings, drawings, and collages that harken back to the styles of both Pop art and Color Field painting, while also updating those techniques with a contemporary flair. In "Endless Summer" Bevilacqua uses spray paint to create works that are reminiscent of Rothko and bring the medium beyond the fundamental idea of graffiti.
