Comprised of a rotating cast of anonymous members, The Bruce High Quality Foundation is known for their humorous and irreverent projects and performances that often take a subversive and critical stance towards the current market’s seemingly insatiable appetite for hyped new artists. Through self-portraiture, The BHQF interrogates the foundations of its own identity. Insinuating its image cum icon into the history of popular culture, art history, and private imagery, the Foundation uses the problematic of its own existence to metonymically reveal the tenuous footholds of truth, history, and humanity. The self-portraits, even when drawn from historical imagery, are always depictions of the present: a face, a mask, a colorless dot. Here the pop star's face is replaced with a naive visage and the letters of a traditional 'BULLS' jersey have been replaced with 'BRUCE', transforming the iconic Miley Cyrus portrait into a self referential representation.
