"Originally, I became attracted to the subject of fires after witnessing the 2007 hill fire in Malibu. The energy of the scene was electrifying and reminded me of the feeling of being in hurricanes and bad lightning storms while growing up on the east coast.
I had previously been focused on painting images of frothy water, concentrating on the organic forms of turbulence, painted in a cool pale palette. In the fire paintings, I continued to illustrate the powerful and sublime, life threatening forces of nature, but now doing so in a warm vibrant palette. The compositions like the paintings of water, predominantly feature rounded organic forms, except these forms now emanate light instead of being illuminated from a distant source.
My goals in the series are both technical and experiential. I wanted to paint the fire glowing in the dark night juxtaposed against a dwarfed landscape to depict its enormity. I work each painting until the illusionistic image begins to create the emotional responses of awe and fear within me.
