In Climbing Rose, a cluster of flowers blooms from the earth, while insects such as butterflies and ladybugs grace its pale yellow petals. A white lattice panel demarcates the roses from a dreamlike montage, comprising a woman at a picnic, a naked figure, a ghostlike being, and a house far off into the distance. The work stems from an ongoing series in which Maloof creates life cycle motifs within depictions of plants and trees. By doing so, the artist invites viewers to meditate on time and human beings' complicated relationship with it. In her own words, "The garden is a place where I find lots of inspiration. It is a constantly changing place, with things growing, dying, being born, and eaten. There is beauty, and there is darkness." For this limited edition, Maloof will hand embellish ten prints by rendering and collaging additional garden creatures.
