Rose offers a close-up view of a singular stem that splits into two flowers, one fully bloomed while the other has just newly opened. A worm slithers in the soil beneath, while a red beetle feeds on one of the petals that otherwise glisten with light. The work stems from an ongoing series in which Maloof creates life cycle motifs within depictions of plants and trees. By doing so, the artist invites viewers to meditate on time and human beings' complicated relationship with it. In her own words, "The garden is a place where I find lots of inspiration. It is a constantly changing place, with things growing, dying, being born, and eaten. There is beauty, and there is darkness." For this limited edition, Maloof will hand embellish ten prints by rendering and collaging additional garden creatures.
