René Ricard "is a semi-secret hero of American art and culture" according to Vice magazine. In the late 1980s Ricard began to develop his poems into paintings, a process which he continues to explore. Occasionally he paints directly on antique prints or found pieces, a method used in the original work here. Growing Up in America is the title of one of René Ricard's most epic poems in which the line…"then love takes us away to faraway places" first appeared. Ricard admits, "I'm vain about my handwriting". This signature script rendered in two-tone color acts like a drop shadow over a classic 19th century genre painting. Two previous prints launched with René Ricard quickly sold out, both editions of 100. For a taste of his written work, pick up "God with Revolver" or his DIA volume from 1979 with the Tiffany blue cover.
