Historically, women have personified landscapes, states and countries. In this case, Kolsrud has situated the female into "a shallow, somewhat controlled space." Though she exists on a grand scale, this figure is not a shimmering clear-eyed Helvetia, but rather a pensive, ambiguous young woman, personifying nothing more specific than a banal bath. The painting also reminds us of Poussin's portrait of Midas bathing himself in the river to remove the curse of his golden touch. Kolsrud is known for her portraits of anonymous women, painted from photographs from 1960s and 1970s. We Alter and Repair refers to a larger body of work that includes paintings of women in domestic situations with a psychedelic twist.
