Last month, eight of Joanne Greenbaum's paintings inaugurated Rachel Uffner Gallery’s new space on the Lower East Side. An Artforum "Critic's Pick", her solo show resulted in praise and reviews from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, The Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, and an interview with Art In America. Lauded for her energetic abstractions, Greenbaum continually pushes the boundaries of traditional painting by layering and interweaving color, shape, and line. “Untitled (Study in Gouache)” is a departure from the din of these frenzied patterns, bringing forth an intimate, single shape and permitting insight into the artist’s multi-layered process. This adroit use of negative space isolates the object from its usual chaos, rendering it vulnerable and open to interpretation while lending itself to the subtle suggestion of an anthropomorphic form.
