Much like Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Annie Leibovitz before him, Bernhard Brungs found inspiration in the life and legacy of Susan Sontag. To inform his body of work about the writer and activist, Brungs consumed Sontag's oeuvre, reading her novels, diaries, essays, and watching her films to increase his understanding of the cultural icon. His curiosity lay not only in her work, but also her public persona and the purposeful air of mystery and misconception surrounding it. Brungs focused on the Sontag series for a year culminating in "On Susan Sontag", a solo exhibition at Dittrich & Schlechtriem in Berlin in late 2012.
