In this four-colour silk-screen print, produced to coincide with his solo exhibition at White Cube Bermondsey, Christian Marclay continues his long-standing focus on the relationship between image and sound. The work features the word 'Rriippp', an onomatopoeic image lifted from a comic book. Treating the word as though it were a score, Marclay has carried out the action it suggests and dramatically torn the print in half. Only the word in the top half of the page remains from this act of defacement. We can no longer understand the full story, or the original cause of the sound. The work is to be framed at the original paper size, however, as though to emphasise the missing part. Marclay employs the physical, even violent act of ripping as a creative mode of production, generating unique artifacts that belie the seriality of printmaking.
Framing Instructions: In order to acknowledge the 'missing' part of the torn print the artwork should be framed to suggest the original paper size of 74 x 54cm with a 1 cm border between the print and frame making the final internal dimensions of the frame 76 x 56 cm. We are happy to arrange framing on request through Darbyshire framers who make a white painted wood frame with conservation materials and UV protection glass. Framing cost available on request. The framed artwork is available to view at White Cube Bermondsey Bookshop.
